Claude Desktop 2.0 UI Analysis (Overview)
Claude Desktop 2.0 UI analysis: how the 1.x chat shell became a sandboxed workstation, with a 6-chapter guide to new features, redesigns, tokens and code.
This is the overview of the Open Claude UI handbook for Claude Desktop 2.0: a community analysis of what changed in the Claude Desktop 2.0 UI compared with 1.x, from the composer and sidebar to the motion system and the multi-window architecture. It is a translation of the Chinese handbook; every value is copied from it unchanged. Open Claude UI is an unofficial community project and is not affiliated with Anthropic.
Target application: Anthropic's official macOS production build

Analysis toolchain: REA (Reverse Engineer Anything) v6.5.0 runs the whole process: Fuse scanning, Mach-O code signature extraction, AST deconstruction and an Electron ASAR runtime audit.
1. The 1.x chat shell vs the 2.0 sandboxed workstation
| Module / dimension | 1.x chat shell | 2.0 sandboxed workstation | Type of change | Core benefit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Positioning | A casual chat shell | An enterprise-grade sandboxed workstation | Repositioning | From single-turn conversations to an engineering productivity workbench |
| Composer | A large 20px rounded pill | 12px flatter radius + a 28px chin row | Redesign | Frees space in the corners; adds --cmp-chin-touch-grow: 4px touch compensation |
| Thinking control | Only an on/off switch | 5 effort levels (Low ~ Max) | New | Fine-grained control of token cost, with enterprise policy locks and a Max warning |
| Offline messages | Error when offline; lost on refresh | Transactional local queue in IndexedDB | New | A zero-loss promise: an amber resend banner when offline, automatic recovery after restart |
| Motion engine | JS (Framer Motion) on the main thread | Pure CSS on the Compositor (47 keyframes) | Redesign | Removes main-thread frame drops and heat while streaming 100+ tokens/s |
| Spring micro-interactions | Simple linear or single-stage easing | 1.32x overshoot rebound (cubic-bezier) | Redesign | 32% more physical overshoot for a mechanical, jelly-like feel |
| Skeleton texture | A stiff vertical 90° photocopier sweep | A 105° angled, non-linear sweep with two modes | Redesign | The diagonal sheen imitates glass refraction and eases the anxiety of waiting |
| Conversation sidebar | Roomy 36px cards, newest first | Dense 28px rows + four converged states for local/cloud/sandbox | Redesign | Built-in Git branch and PR pills and chapter pins (Pin as chapter) |
| Base color | Warm beige paper + static deep shadows | Cool snow white #FCFCFB + 0.5px hairlines | Redesign | Strictly follows the single-border rule; dynamic diffusion with relative color-mix() colors |
| Window architecture | One Electron window, switched back and forth | Separate pop-out windows (Window Pop-out) | New | Parallel sandboxed tasks, with separate V8 heaps and in-window search |
🧭 2.0 chapters and reading guide
- Chapter 1: Overview & Version Boundaries
- 1.1 Version boundary (bundled CLI 2.1.295 vs standalone CLI 2.1.299/300)
- 1.2 How the global design contract evolved (1.x chat shell vs 2.0 sandboxed workstation, environment immutability, the zero-loss promise)
- Chapter 2: New Features in Depth
- 2.1 Separate multi-window architecture (Electron IPC pop-out windows, conversation isolation and Find-in-Page)
- 2.2 Offline visualization components (Mermaid/Chart.js/Grid.js bundled inline, and the inactive-row rules)
- 2.3 Offline message retry (ChatComposerQueuedMessages and transactional persistence in IndexedDB)
- 2.4 The reasoning effort selector (ModelSelectorEffort's 5 levels and enterprise policy guardrails)
- 2.5 The modern CSS motion system (sibling-index() cascades, View Transitions page transitions, scroll-driven masks)
- 2.6 Home card hover glow (3D hover perspective and a radial highlight at the bottom)
- 2.7 Ultra-thin hairlines and relative colors (0.5px hairlines and dynamic diffusion with color-mix())
- 2.8 Touch negative-margin compensation (the --cmp-chin-touch-grow size compensation algorithm)
- 2.9 Enterprise managed config migration (6 breaking key renames, the risk of falling back to unmanaged, OAuth re-authentication)
- Chapter 3: Architecture Redesign & Comparison
- 3.1 Conversation sidebar and environment convergence (a dense 28px status column, four-state grouping by physical source, Git branch and PR pills, the Halo heartbeat)
- 3.2 How the workbench canvas and base color evolved (from warm clay letter paper to cool snow white #FCFCFB, dark ink #151515)
- 3.3 Base radius and density system (Composer radius from 20px to 12px/14px, the compact/comfortable density engine)
- 3.4 Model selector and usage awareness (usage gauges in the model picker, 5-hour quota awareness, Context moved into the new-session drawer)
- 3.5 Skeletons and pill micro-interactions (the two-stage Pill 1.32x overshoot, two Skeleton modes Wave/Lockstep + a 105° sweep)
- 3.6 Runtime concurrency and environment isolation (ten key concurrency fixes, a hard-locked Windows OpenSSH path and certificate rotation)
- 3.7 The chapter pin UI leak (what Pin as chapter really is, and evidence from internal tooling)
- 3.8 Moving motion onto the pure-CSS compositor (why everything moved to the Compositor, removing frame drops while streaming 100+ tokens/s)
- Chapter 4: The System Foundation
- 4.1 Pure-CSS motion parameters (the full list of 47 @keyframes cds-*)
- 4.2 Native component namespaces (the contract for 40 native data-cds component namespaces)
- 4.3 Response times and Bézier curves (5 timing tokens from 60ms to 450ms and 3 exact Bézier control-point sets)
- Chapter 5: Production Reference Code
- 5.1 Model selection and effort selector (
ModelSelectorEffort.tsx) - 5.2 Composer bottom toolbar (
ChatComposerChin.tsx) - 5.3 Motion engine and micro-interactions (
CdsMotionEngine.tsx)
- 5.1 Model selection and effort selector (
- Chapter 6: Summary & Significance
- 6.1 Structural standardization
- 6.2 Physics-based motion
- 6.3 Architectural security
