Claude Desktop 2.0: Overview & Version Boundaries
Claude Desktop 2.0 overview: v2.37337.1, bundled CLI 2.1.295, and how 2.0 moved from a chat shell to a sandboxed workstation with zero-loss input.
📚 Back to the 2.0 overview · Next: Chapter 2: New Features in Depth ➡️
This chapter sets the scope of the Claude Desktop 2.0 analysis: which version was analyzed, what counts as a 2.0 change, and how the global design contract moved from a chat shell to a sandboxed workstation. It is a translation of the Chinese handbook chapter; every value is copied from it unchanged, and code blocks are reproduced as-is.
1. Overview
1.1 Version boundary
In the full Claude Desktop update released on 2026-10-15, the version jumped to v2.37337.1 (@ant/[email protected]).
From REA's review of the unpacked MainWindowPage-BD9CWQ83.css, index.chunk-BWk6pVUt.js and the core Vite modules of this version, we set the following rules for classifying the technical changes in this report:

endWe also draw a clear line between the desktop package and the separately released command-line tool:
- Bundled with desktop: the Claude Code CLI bundled inside desktop v2.37337.1 is 2.1.295;
- Released separately the same day: CLI 2.1.299 / 2.1.300 (including idle compaction, the
/effortcommand and mod virtualText) are standalone command-line updates and are not included in the desktop installer.
1.2 How the global design contract evolved
1. The 1.x chat shell vs the 2.0 sandboxed workstation
| Dimension | CDS 1.x baseline | CDS 2.0 architecture |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning | A single-window "streaming chat shell for a large model" | A "development workstation" with local VM isolation and multi-agent dispatch |
| Execution isolation | Loosely bound to local folders | Strictly separates four physical execution sources: This Computer / Cloud / SSH / Slack |
| Multi-task view | One main window, chat and files squeezed into a split screen | Separate PopoutWindow (pop-out window) support for viewing in parallel across screens |
| Offline capability | Relies on a public CDN to fetch render scripts | Three render engines built into the local ASAR, fully usable offline |
| State persistence | Memory only; pending input is lost on refresh | An offline retry ledger in IndexedDB, restored in place after refresh |
2. Why Anthropic reshaped the global contract
- A paradigm shift from "Chatbot" to "Autonomous Agent":
In the 1.x era, users mostly talked to Claude in text, generated code and copied it by hand. In the 2.0 era, the Claude Code CLI and Cowork mode began taking over terminal operations, automatic file reads/writes and parallel Git branch clones on the user's computer. Had the old "single-window conversation" model stayed, autonomous tasks running in the background would easily interrupt what the user is doing in the foreground (eating keystrokes, stealing focus). - Tighter physical security and sandbox permissions:
Grouping by folder in the old version made users think every task had the same execution boundary. In fact, tasks running in a lightweight local Linux VM, on a remote Linux SSH server and in a cloud container differ completely in destructive potential, file write scope and security boundary. So 2.0 restructures conversations to be isolated by physical source (Environment), removing the risk of crossing security boundaries.
3. Core design contracts: environment immutability and the zero-loss input promise
- Contract 1: the environment is immutable after a conversation is created (Environment Immutability):
In 2.0, onceNewSessionDrawercreates a conversation, its Context Window size, Worktree root and MCP extension config are frozen permanently, preventing the Prompt Caching invalidation and state confusion that changing the environment mid-conversation would cause. - Contract 2: user instructions are never lost (Zero-loss Input Promise):
Whether the app crashes, the network drops for a moment, the 5-hour rate limit is hit or the developer refreshes the window, the user's instructions must be persisted to local storage and have a deterministic in-place retry mechanism.
